The Church of Saint Mary Magdalene (Russian: Храм святой равноапостольной Марии Магдалины) in Madrid, Spain, is a temple belonging to the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarchate of Moscow, being the cathedral see of the Diocese of Madrid and Lisbon, located at number 48 of the Gran Vía de Hortaleza, near the Pinar del Rey Metro station.[1]u200b

The history of the Orthodox presence in Spain dates back to 1761 in the Russian embassy where there was a chapel with this dedication that lasted until the end of the 19th century, when part of the furniture and icons were sent to Argentina. The works began after the transfer of the site (756 square meters) by the municipal authorities to the Nativity of Christ Foundation, linked to the Moscow Patriarchate, in 2010. The Moscow architect A. R. Vorontsov designed the temple, in collaboration with the Spanish architect Jesús San Vicente.[3]u200bIn June In 2013, the church was opened for worship by the Orthodox community residing in Madrid, mainly Russians, Ukrainians, Georgians and Moldovans, as well as Spaniards.[ 4]u200b

Stylistically, the building follows the neo-Byzantine style, with five golden domes, representing Christ and the four evangelists. It also consists of an annex building for the residence and cultural center Russia House.[5] u200b

On December 28, 2018, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church agreed to the creation of the Diocese of Madrid and Lisbon as part of the reorganization of the Archdiocese of Chersonese into the Patriarchal Exarchate of Western Europe, becoming the Church of the Magdalena in the Cathedral of the new diocese.[6]u200b

On January 18, 2019, Archbishop Néstor signed a decree in which the temple of Santa María Magdalena is declared the cathedral of the diocese.[7]u200b
