Città sotterranea di Camerano

The caves of Camerano (also known as the "underground city of Camerano") are an underground complex of considerable extension, which develops below the historic center of the town of Camerano. The underground complex has a totally artificial origin, hence the name of "city" is preferable to that of "cave", which is more ambiguous.
The precise extension of the hypogeum is not known, as it has not been completely surveyed. It extends roughly under the entire historic center, even outside the boundaries of the ancient fortified city. There are also other hypogea in the territory of Camerano, but located outside the town. These further tunnels, popularly called "devil's holes" would be the remains of an ancient underground aqueduct that runs along the slopes of Mount Conero. This hypogeum has elements of similarity with other hypogea, such as those of Osimo and Orvieto.
