The GR-221 was the first long-distance trail planned in the Balearic Islands, prompted by the Mallorca Island Council, which presented it in 1996 and approved the project in 1999. In 2002 it obtained provisional approval, which was renewed in 2020.
The Territorial Plan of Mallorca (2004) provided for the preparation of a special plan, which was finally approved on June 17, 2015 and which defines the definitive layout, the permitted uses and the regulations that must be applied.
It is called the Ruta de la Pedra en Dry because of the large number of constructions made with the dry stone technique that can be found along its route: banks, fountains mine, walls, huts, snow houses...
These elements and their restoration are the hallmark of the Route and differentiate it from other similar itineraries. In this regard, the rehabilitation of the paths from Barranc de Biniaraix, from Correu, the Galileu vaults and the Son Macip and Galileu snow houses stand out.
