Castell de Cabrera (illa de Cabrera)

The Castell de Cabrera is a fortification on the island of Cabrera, currently it is a solid hexagonal mole, slightly elongated, located on the eastern tip of the entrance to its natural harbor, a altitude of 72 meters above sea level. The successive attacks it has suffered throughout its history suggest that it has little to do with the original construction. Only in the xvi century was the castle destroyed and rebuilt at least ten times. As well as a military garrison, it has been a quarantine tower and a presidium.

The danger of building a tower in Cabrera, where the possibilities of retreat in case of danger were minimal, meant that the salary assigned to it was the highest of the Balearic Islands, and that its guards were often condemned and thus commuted their sentence.

The danger of building a tower in Cabrera, where the possibilities of retreat in case of danger were minimal, meant that the salary assigned to it was the highest of the Balearic Islands, and that its guards were often condemned and thus commuted their sentence.

The first reference dates from 1410, when the tower keepers Pere and Guillem Saragossa claim full payment of their salary from the Viceroy of Mallorca, so at that date it was already operational and it is assumed that it built in the last half of the xiv century, it is possible that then it would not have been much more than a watchtower.

In 1425, the useful owner of Cabrera, Bernat Saragossa, on behalf of himself and the Paborde of Tarragona, signed an agreement with the University of the City and Kingdom of Mallorca to maintain a garrison to defend the 'illa and the newly built Cabrera Castle, which suggests an extension of the original tower.

In 1510 two Berber galleys attacked Cabrera, captured the keepers and twenty-two fishermen and destroyed the tower, a sudden storm allowed the arrival of help, which freed the captives.

In 1550, Dragut, at the head of 1500 Turks, took the island, seized the castle's artillery and completely demolished the building. Then, in the same century, a chapel was built there where the clergy of Santanyí went to say mass for the garrison. In 1698, after being restored and improved again, the castle came under the authority of the University of Mallorca.

In 1715, in the context of the War of Succession, the military Francisco Mariscal was its governor, at the head of a garrison of about twenty soldiers, and he was entrusted with the surveillance of possible Bourbon incursions, in this context, artillery fire was fired from the fortress for the last time. From 1716, the castle remained under royal authority.

A few years ago the castle was the subject of a not too successful restoration.
