Context sobre Himàlaia
L'Himàlaia (del sànscrit हिमालय, himālaia, compost per hima: 'neu' i ālaia: 'casa, lloc') és un massís muntanyós d'Àsia que es reparteix entre el Bhutan, l'Índia, el Nepal, el Pakistan, el Tibet i la Xina. Forma un arc amb una llargària de 2.600 km d'est a oest i una amplària de 350 km de nord a sud. És la serralada més alta de la Terra, amb catorze cims de més de 8.000 metres d'altitud, amb l'Everest com a punt més alt (8.848 m), seguit del K2 (8.611 m) i el Kanchenjunga (8.598 m).
El primer mapa raonablement acurat de la serralada fou dibuixat per Antoni de Montserrat l'any 1590 acompanyant al seu llibre Mongolicae Legationis Commentarius, i la primera exploració europea fou del portuguès António de Andrade en 1524.
