Fogueres de Sant Antoni

The Fogueres de Sant Antoni are constructions made in many places in the Catalan Countries of wood cut expressly for the fire.

The young people are in charge between Christmas and mid-January of gathering the wood. Many bonfires are built around a central tree, called May, which has been stripped of its branches completely except for the upper part. In other places, a doll is added that is placed on top of the bonfire.

A characteristic way of building the bonfire is the so-called barraca, a pyramidal construction, with the May as the central axis and other trunks or ribs arranged around it and stuffed with branches. The lower part remains empty.

In the towns where the life of Saint Anthony is represented, the demons try to burn the saint without succeeding. The character remains for a few minutes under the fire of the hut.

The bonfire is the center of the celebration. The community gathers around it, eats and carries out various festive activities.
