Cursa de Sant Silvestre

The Cursa de Sant Silvestre is an athletic race with an urban route that takes place in some cities on (December 31), that is to say, the last day of the year. It is sometimes called the Race of the Noses in some places in the Catalan Countries, in reference to the Man of the Noses, the mysterious and mythical character who only appears on this date in our lands. In other places it receives still other names, such as the one in Sabadell, which is called Cursa de Cap d'Any 'La Nostra', or the one in the city of Mallorca, which is called the "10 km Palma de Mallorca - Yodeman Skyrunner".

The first St. Sylvester race that was held was in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo in 1925, which coincided with an old French tradition of night races that were held on the night of end of the year where the contestants carried torches to run. The first St. Sylvester race that was held was in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo in 1925, which coincided with an old French tradition of night races that were held on the night of end of the year where the contestants carried torches to run. The race is usually contested on the 31st of December in the afternoon, although there is a lot of variety in times and days, despite the fact that the initial idea is for it to be the last of the year. It usually bears the name of the pontiff Sylvester I, who was sanctified for being the first papacy not martyred by the Roman Empire. Starting with the Corrida Internacional de São Silvestre in Sao Paulo, the tradition of this race has spread to several cities around the world and has become a typical Christmas event with great popularity. There are different modalities, from the most professional to the most popular and fun.

In Catalonia, the Cursa dels Nassos de Barcelona is contested in the same city, and the Sant Silvestre Barcelonesa in Sant Cugat del Vallès, to name just a few. In Valencia it is called the San Silvestre Popular race and reached its 33rd edition in 2016, while in Madrid there is the very popular race, the San Silvestre Vallecana. Sant Lluís (Menorca) celebrates the Sant Silvestre de Menorca Popular Run on December 31, and in Ibiza, the Ascent to the Cathedral. In the Valencian Country, apart from the race in the capital, there are also a vast amount of Sant Silvestre races throughout the territory, some of which start as early as December 23, such as the one in the City of Alicante.< /p>
