Jaciments de Fumanya
The Fumanya deposits are marl and marly limestone surfaces that partially limit a series of opencast coal mines located at the base of the Ensija mountain range, at 1,550 meters of altitude, within the municipalities of Fígols and Vallcebre (Berguedà, Barcelona). The total extent of these rock walls is about 35,000 m² and they preserve about 3,000 footprints and about 50 definite titanosaur tracks, in addition to plant and invertebrate fossils. These are unique sites in Europe due to their characteristics (age, type of track, dinosaur that produced the track, amount of footprints and exposure). The deposits of Torotoro and Cal Orcko (Bolivia) are the only ones in the rest of the world that can be compared with the Berguden deposits. In 2005, the Fumanya sites were declared a Cultural Property of National Interest (BCIN) by the Generalitat de Catalunya. Finally, in 2014, they were declared under this category of protection.
