The Cavern of the Dragon is located on the Chemin des Dames, on the territory of the commune of Oulches-la-Vallée-Foulon, in the Aisne department, in the Hauts- of France. It is a strategic place during the First World War and more precisely during the Nivelle offensive, during the battle of the observatories.
It was the Germans who, during their occupation of the cave, nicknamed it the Dragon's Cave (Drachenhöhle in German). The flames and sparks from the machine guns, coming out of the entrances to the cave during the fighting, reminded them of the flames spat by the dragons from their caves.
