Basílica Santuari de Nostra Senyora de Meritxell

The Mother of God of Meritxell is a sanctuary and a carving found in the Andorran parish of Canillo, specifically in the town of Meritxell. The Catalan architect Ricard Bofill was in charge of the construction of the new sanctuary, which houses a retrospective exhibition with photographs from different periods and the replica of the Virgin Mary, which is still venerated.

Every year there is a gathering, on September 8, Andorra's national holiday, and every year a large crowd gathers at the sanctuary, presided over by the representatives of the co-princes and the Andorran authorities. In July 2014, Pope Francis granted the sanctuary the distinction of minor basilica. The sanctuary of Meritxell is one of the five minor basilicas of the bishopric of Urgell, with Santa Maria (the cathedral of Seu d'Urgell), the basilica of Santa Maria de Valldeflors (Tremp), the sanctuary of Núria and Sant Crist from Balaguer.
